Mahatma Gandhi started an all-India hartal on  August 31 , 1920 .

The Muslims were enraged on the British and they started a movement called the Khilafat movement to protest against the British .

Gandhiji saw the movement as an opportunity for Hindu Muslim unity.

Hence he supported the Muslims and started non cooperation along with the British .

So he organised an all India hartal .

NOTE :

The Muslims were enraged because the British had done ill will towards the Caliph who was believed to be the religious head of the Muslims.

Also the Muslim's demands were not accepted and hence the Khilafat Movement was started.
