Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act
The GOI has notified the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (NREGA) in September 2005. This Act was implemented in the notified districts of various states of the country as notified by the GOI. This scheme has implemented in 330 districts in two phases of 200 and 130 districts respectively. On September 2007, the GOI has notified all other remaining districts in the country including Puducherry in the third phase. The DRDA., Puducherry has been assigned with the task of implementation of NREGA in this U.T.Puducherry from 01-04-2008.
The "National Rural Employment Guarantee Act-2005" (NREGA) implemented in UT of Puducherry as National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, Puducherry, aims at enhancing the livelihood security of the households in rural areas of the country by providing at least one hundred days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. The objective of the Act is to create durable assets and strengthen the livelihood resource base of the rural poor. The choice of works suggested in the Act addresses causes of chronic poverty like drought, deforestation and soil erosion, so that the process of employment generation is maintained on a sustainable basis.
