India launched the Pulse Polio Immunization (PPI) program in 1995 as a result of World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Answer:

Pulse-polio programme was started in India in December 1995, and its target was to eradicate polio by 2003. However, it is still prevalent in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, etc. The main reason being this is that in few sections of the society, there is a misconception that polio vaccine makes children sterile. These people do not get their children vaccinated against polio and hence, the target of polio eradication is not achieved.
