The East India Company defeated the  Sikhs at the Battle of Gujarat on 21st February 1849 and on 2nd April 1849 Lord Dalhousie annexed Punjab and consolidated the British Empire. It was one of the largest areas of the Indian sub continent  that the British had annexed.It put an end to the sovereignity of the power of the Sikhs.

Following a sequel of events like the death of Ranjit Singh also led to the defeat of the Sikhs.
