On 15 August 1947, Bismillah Khan played the Raag Kaafi on his shehnai from the Red Fort. The event was historical because it was on the occasion of India's Independence from British Rule.

Shenai was played by the nai (barber) in the court of a king. hence its was named as shenai. Later bismillah khan did some changes in its shape and drew some more holes in it. And was named pungi.
