The decennial Census of India has been administered 15 times, as of 2011.  The census of India has been conducted in every 10 years, which began in 1872. Moreover, the first comprehensive census was conducted in 1881.

Post-1949, it has been administered by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India who works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. All the censuses since 1951 were carried under the 1948 Census of India Act. The latest census was carried out in 2011.
