Answer:

The “Fortress prison”, the “Bastille” was stormed by the people on the afternoon of “July 14, 1789”.

Members of a "French social class" known as the “Third estate”, consisting mostly of "craftsmen and store owners", were responsible for the storming of the Bastille. They wanted the commoners to also have a say in the government. To protect themselves against the rumoured attack of the King, they attacked the prison to get ammunition and gun powder. The prison was also a "symbol of oppression" by the king and held many political prisoners.
