The French East India Company was founded in the year 1664 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a French minister who served under King Louis XIV. It was headquartered in Paris, France.
The basic idea was to compete with the English and Dutch who had trade presence in India at that time.
They set up their first factory in Surat, in the year 1668, followed by another in Masulipatnam. Later, French establishments came up in Pondichery, Yanaon, Karikal, Chandranagore and Mahe.
The French East India Company was not managed well and it slid into bankruptcy. By the second half of 1700, it stopped operation in India.
