In 1947 the British Government sent Lord Mountbatten to India, as the last viceroy with the task of transferring power into Indian hands. The political condition in India had become worse, when Lord Mountbatten arrived in March 1947 as viceroy. He handled the situation with great skill. He held a discussion with the Indian leaders and came to a conclusion that partition alone can solve the Indian problem. He announced his plan on 3rd june, 1947. The country was divided into two independent nations- India and Pakistan. The announcement of the partition was followed by more riots particularly in Punjab and Bengal. Many people were killed and millions became homeless. The British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act in July 1947. With it the British rule came to an end on 15th August,1947.
