The abolishment of Privy Purses in India, and the official recognition of the titles, was first brought before the Parliament in 1969 and sucessfully passed in the Lok Sabha. It failed by one vote to reach the required majority in the Rajya Sabha.In 1971 it was once more proposed in 1971, and was successfully passed as the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of India in 1971
