The Simon Commission was appointed by the British Government in November 1927.
The chairman of this commission was Sir John Simon, and hence the commission was called as Simon Commission, and was constituted by 7 Members of British Parliament.
Explanation:
- In the Government of India Act of 1919, the system of Dyarchy or dual government was introduced, to which leaders of Indian freedom struggle opposed.
- This act also had the provisions that after the period of completion of 10 years a committee would be formed to review the workings of this form of dual government.
- For the review of this workings the Simon Commission was set up.
- The Indian leaders were outraged because it did not have even one Indian member, and all the members of this commission were Whites, and they felt ignored and decided to boycott this commission.
- The Congress Party, the Muslim League, Justice Party and all other parties and members unanimously boycotted the commission.
- When the commission reached India on February 1928, there were widespread protests throughout the country, and people shouted slogans of Simon Go Back.
- During one such protest in Lahore, Lala Lajpat Rai was brutally wounded in the lathi charge and died later.
- But the British government later assured the Indian leaders that the system of dyarchy would be abolished.
- And in the Government of India Act, 1935 the system of dyarchy was abolished.
