The Vernacular press Act was pass in 1887.
Before this act was passed, the newspapers of each state produced newspapers in their mother tongued . So, what was published could not be understood by the colonial government. They thought that they would publish news against them which would result in a revolt or a rebel. So to prevent this, the colonial government passed the vernacular press act so that all the news is published in English and they could understand what was being published.
