1. The work of masonry are: monuments, statues, castles, forts, churches, and all the other buildings that are prone to be destroyed during a war.
2. In a war the warring enemy armies fire destructive cannons and artillery at each other. The high intensity bombs destroy and ravage buildings.
3. The living record referred to here is the description of Shakespeare's friend's good qualities and the beauty of his kind and compassionate behaviour in this poem.
4. The poet is quite respectful to his friend. He has the ability to imagine and see beyond the obvious and visible. He believes in goodness and everlasting life. He also believes in the might of art and poetry, which, according to him are more powerful and lasting than war.
