When we heat paper, wood, etc and after burning it turns gray in colour, why ?

Answer:

when we heat paper the oxygen from the air combines with carbon and hydrogen in paper. turning some of it into carbon dioxide and water vapor , which waft with carbon particulates in the smoke.
