When we keep a glass in water it does not appear on its original place so what is the principle behind it?

This is due to the refraction of water.

The light slows down when in water and speed up when in air this transition of the light coming from denser medium to a rarer medium causes light to bend. This makes us feel like an illusion as our eyes tend to see only in straight lines hence displace of the objects occur when in water.

Hope it helps.
