It is because speed of sound is faster than speed of gas molecules. So when we open the gas tap sound comes first then gas molcules gets diffused with the air to give smell.

Gas sound propagates by wave and gas smell propagates through the process of diffusion.
Explanation:
- The sound or vibrations of a gas moves through the movements of air layers, and it reaches the person quicker, but by the actual movement or motion of the air layers, the scent of a gas enters the person, and it enters much slower.
- Gas sound propagates by wave and gas smell propagates through the process of diffusion. Therefore, the gas sound reaches the person earlier than the gas smell.
