When we place a glass prism in the path of a narrow beam of white light a spectrum is obtained. What happens when a second identical prism is placed in an inverted position with respect to the first prism? Draw a labelled ray diagram to illustrate it.

Reverse of dispersion of light

Explanation:

When white light passes through a prism, it gets dispersed into the component colors of violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. This is the principle on which rainbows are formed.

Newton showed that reverse of dispersion of light is also possible. He placed two identical glass prisms together in an inverted position with respect to each other and arranged for a narrow beam of white light to fall obliquely on one of the faces of the prisms.

It was observed that the light gets dispersed when it passes through the first prism. The second prism receives all the rainbow colours of light, recombines them into the original white light.
