Dry raisins undergo a process called osmosis. Osmosis is a process by which the molecule of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
Osmosis can be devided into 2 types : Endosmosis and exosmosis.
Dry raisins swell up because they undergo Endosmosis. When the raisin is placed in a hypertonic solution i.e. water then the water penetrates through the semipermeable membrane i.e. the skin of the raisin and hence the raisin swells up.
