Through the process of osmosis, the water content of the snail is transferred to the outside of the snail's body through the semipermeable membrane of its skin. (In osmosis, the molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.)The snail thus shrivels and dies. This also holds true for slugs.
