when we stop pedaling the bicycle , it slows and gradually stops. why?

A cyclist riding along a road does not come to rest immediately after he stop pedalling.

The bicycle continue to move forward due to the inertia of motion.

But eventually it comes to rest as a result of the retarding action of friction.
