Technically speaking when we throw a ball upwards it's speed reduces . The reason is the gravitational pull of the earth . The value of gravitational acceleration is 9.8 metre per square second and this downward acceleration reduces the speed of the ball.
Hope it helped

The speed of the ball retards or decreases due to action of the gravitational force on the ball.
