The Bastille Storming happened on the  14th of July 1789 in Paris , France. This violent assault by the people of France upon the government marked the beginning of the French Revolution. In the late 1300s the Bastille was a fortress constructed to defend Paris at the time of the Hundred Years War. By the late 1700s, King Louis XVI used the Bastille mainly as a state prison. The rebels who attacked the Bastille were primarily artisans and shop owners residing in Paris. They were part of a section of French society called Third Estate. Around 1000 men engaged in the assault

Explanation:

  • The Third Estate had demanded from the king  that the commoners be given more say in govt. They were concerned he planned for an invasion by the French army. First they seized the "Hotel des Invalides" in Paris  to arm themselves, where they could get muskets. They did not have gun powder though. The Bastille had been said to be full of political prisoners, and symbolised much of the king's oppression. It had gunpowder stored which the revolutionaries required for their weapons.
  • The Revolutionaries entered the Bastille on the morning of 14 July. They requested that the Bastille military chief, Governor de Launay, surrender the prison and give the gunpowder over to them. He declined. The crowd grew restless as talks dragged on. They managed to get into the courtyard in the early afternoon.
  • They started trying to break into the main building, once within the courtyard. The Bastille soldiers were frightened and shot into the crowd. The war had just started. The turning point in battle came when some of the soldiers entered the crowd side. De Launay soon realised the situation had become disastrous. He gave up the fortress and the revolutionaries took it.
  • In the fighting about 100 of the revolutionaries died. Governor de Launay & 3 of his officers were assassinated by the crowd post surrender. The Bastille Storm set in motion a series of events which culminated in the fall of King Louis XVI & the French Revolution. Revolutionary progress gave commoners across France the strength to rise up & fight against the nobles who had ruled them for so long. The Bastille Storming date, 14 July, is being observed today as the National Day of France.
