Explanation:

Say some vehicle is travelling on the road. And lets assume right side is positive and left side is negative ..and the vehicle travels along the left side and after some time acquires acceleration of some magnitude .Now though the vehicle has a negative velocity and negative acceleration the magnitude of its velocity or the speed increases as velocity and acceleration are in the same direction(they add up).
