Work is said to be negative when the direction of distance or displacement is opposite to the direction of the force

Work is zero when the force is perpendicular to the direction of distance or displacement.

Note: Work of an object in circular is always zero as the gravitation force will be perpendicular to the direction of distance or displacement.

Also frictional force is best example of negative work done.
