Waste thrown into water will, in all likelihood, find its way out into the ocean. Plastic waste in particular is extremely harmful to sea life and there are many concerns about 'micro plastics ' entering the food chain via this route.
Some sea creatures mistake plastic bags for jelly fish and choke upon ingesting them. Much of the waste will wash up on coasts many miles away. Even the pristine artic has been polluted by plastics.
