When you burn wood, it initially burns with a flame. Later it only glows without a flame. Why?

It is because burning requires oxygen so burning of wood takes place with a flame and later after burning is completed very high temperatured heat stored and also methane gas is produced because of the burning of the organic compounds in wood which causes the reddish orange glow.
