Mainland Chinese, if given a choice, will pick foreign products over domestic ones. Just having a "made somewhere that's not China" tag is enough to sell mediocre products for inflated prices.
One such example is Da Vinci Furntiture, a luxury furniture brand said to be from Italy which sold mediocre quality products at inflanted prices. It turned out they were actually made in China but the shady owner had everything sent to Hong Kong then re-imported back to the mainland with Italian labels.
