Answer:
‘If you plant a tree, you plant a life’
Planting trees is measured as the long-life investment – the investment which provides many benefits in return. Planting trees helps control the climate transformation. Trees enhance the beauty of nature and make life more beautiful. The study shows that spending some time in greenery helps reduce the level of stress and make you feel fresh and relaxed. We can get so many benefits. In other words, we can save our planet and control pollution by planting trees. However, plantation is beneficial in so many different ways.
Trees protect environment from pollution, filter dust and make the environment clean and healthy. Trees also protect from air pollution by eliminating dust particles and smoke from the air by absorbing them on their leaves. Trees control soil erosion and overflow of storm water which may reduce the impact of flooding. Trees have the ability to eliminate carbon dioxide and other pollution emissions from atmosphere. Also help control temperature and minimize the temperature in urban areas. Trees are also considered a source of food and shelter for many animals and birds and provide us with different types of fruits, vegetables and herbs which are used for medical purposes.
After considering all these benefits why are we not achieving them? Why are we not planting trees? Why the ratio of trees is low in our country? As we are all experiencing extreme hot weather in Karachi and climate change is a great threat to the city. Tree plantation is the only solution to bring down the temperature and help fight climate change.
In 2015, Karachi faced the extreme heatwave, claiming over 1000 lives. This year in May, the city again experienced heatwave as the temperature soared up to 45°C. Pakistan also experiences deforestation and lost many forests over the years.
Deforestation is the removal or cutting of trees for different purposes such as mining, construction, furniture and paper making, and making land available for housing. Trees help prevent and protect land from direct sun heat. By removing trees land cannot be protected from direct sun heat and the climate becomes extremely hot.
Deforestation is one of the reasons for climate change. Pakistan needs to fight against the unpleasant climate conditions and promote the forestry and greenery culture in our country. Trees are the natural coolers of our planet and help produce clouds which result in rainfall. By planting trees we can change the climate of Karachi. After considering the hot weather of Karachi many organizations and groups of individuals took the initiative and launched different campaigns on plantation. The Sare-Aam team is one of them.
Their aim is to plant 1.4 million tress before 14th August- The Independence Day. Their team approaches different schools for this purpose and made a record of planting 71 trees in 71 seconds. Many organizations, government sectors and a group of individuals took part in the betterment of the environment. Research shows the reduction of 6 to 7-degree centigrade temperature in Karachi after planting trees.
That does not end with just plantation. People must have awareness about which trees are good for environment and which are not and which places are suitable for them. People should get awareness about the right type of tree which is suitable for surroundings and harmless in any way. Citizens should also be aware of the best time for plantation. It is good when the weather is moderate and plantation should be avoided when the weather is extremely hot or cold. As a part of the society, our responsibility does not end here.
The care and maintenance of nature is also our responsibility. Saving of water and recycling it is important due to water shortage and lack of rain in Karachi. We have to maintain good care of trees by watering them daily. However, there are trees which require less water such as flam of forest (Gulmohar), Neem and Amaltas. Let the trees grow for the better environment. (The writer is a student of Jinnah University for Women, Business Administration Department 3rd year).
