The violet color fades away after dilution because:
- When titration is performed, the dark purple KMnO₄ is slowly added into the sample.
- Due to the dilution, under some heat and acidic conditions, Mn which is in 7+ oxidation state in the permanganate reduces into 2+ state as it reacts with the sample.
- The 2+ state is colorless, so no net change is observed as long as there is still some sample left and it appears as if the color has faded away.
