The number is 3 or -2.

Given - Result

Find - Number

Solution - Let the number be x. Forming equation-

x² - x = 6

x² - x - 6 = 0

x² - 3x + 2x - 6 = 0

x(x - 3) +2(x - 3) = 0

(x - 3)(x + 2) = 0

So, x = 3 and -2

Keep the value in formula

For number 3

3² - 3 = 6

9 - 3 = 6

6 = 6

LHS = RHS

For number -2

(-2)² - (-2) = 6

4 + 2= 6

6 = 6

LHS = RHS

Hence, the number can be 3 or -2.
