In Act ii scene I of the play, after selling his soul to the devil, Dr. Faustus inquires Mephistopheles: “tell me, where is the place that men call hell? To which he answers: “Under the heavens” …
He describes hell as a torturous chamber where all souls who are to suffer are sent. He further on takes on a philosophical tone by picturing the doomsday when everything will cease to exist, then for Mephistopheles, every place that is not heaven will be hell.
