where and why had the athletes come ?​

The athletes came from so many countries to the Special Olympic Games. They were there to participate in different events and win bronze, silver and gold medals in the sports fest organised for the differently abled athletes.

In the poem, David Roth does not mention which Olympics it actually was, where it was held and when. But according to the folks at the Special Olympics Washington office, the incident happened at a 1976 track-and-field event held in Spokane, Washington.
