During the process of splitting of cells that is meiosis and mitosis, there is a doubling or duplication of of chromosome and the equal amount of chromosome is distributed among the daughter cells.

In this way it carries information and characteristics from one generation to next generation. The structure of chromosomes is like a thread and it carries protein.
