The nucleus (or the center of an atom) consists of neutrons and protons. Electrons surround the nucleus in shells. The shell closest to the nucleus can hold two electrons.

Electrons are present in shells surrounded nucleus.

Explanation:-

• The electron is a sub-atomic particle, whose electric charge is a negative. They are present at the shells where each shell can hold upto a fix numbers of Electrons.

• The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, the second shell can hold up to 8 electrons in the form of 2+6, the third shell can hold up to 18 electrons in the form of (2 + 6 + 10).

• Electron's symbol is e¯

• Electron was discovered by J.J Thomson in 1897 when he was experimenting on cathode ray. This experiments with cathode ray tubes analysis that all atoms contains a tiny negatively charged subatomic particles or electrons.
