In India, the laterite soils are found in areas of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, parts of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Assam.

EXPLANATION:

  • In India, types of soil have been classified on basis of colour or main function for which that particular soil is majorly used.
  • Therefore, categories of soil include black soil, red and yellow soil, alluvial soil, mountain soil, and laterite soil.
  • The word laterite means brick and these soils are mainly used for making bricks.
  • The nutrients content of these soils is low particularly the amount of Nitrogen, potash and phosphorous is low but, it has high concentrations of iron.
  • Also, the soil is not very good for supporting agricultural because, it is mainly found in slopes of hills with high temperatures and high rainfall.
  • The rainwater falling from slopes moves at great speed and washes down the fertile top layer of the soil, this process is called leaching.
  • Some of crops that are grown in these soils is cash crops like tea, coffee, rubber, etc.
