They are found near water. They are known for being the only kind of tree to be capable of thriving in salt water.

The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world, located in the Ganges River delta in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. The Pichavaram mangroves in Tamil Nadu is India's one of the largest mangrove forests.

The most extensive area of mangroves is found in Asia, followed by Africa and South America. Four countries (Indonesia, Brazil, Nigeria and Australia) account for about 41 percent of all mangroves.
