The bulk of nutrients in an ecosystem are stored in the soil or lithosphere.
The lithosphere contains maximum amount of nutrients because it provides for organisms such as plants and insects. These plants and animals which depend on the land for survival again transfer their nutrients present in the body back to the soil.
This occurs both if the organism dies and decomposes in the soil, or if consumed by a predator higher up in the food chain.
