Answer:
Fermentation is the process by which sugars are breakdown into alcohol, organic acids, or hydrogen in absence of oxygen.
In eukarotic cells (such as yeast and mammalian muscle cells), fermentation and glycolysis take place in the cytoplasm of the cell. Whereas, other processes such as pyruvate oxidation, Krebs cycle, and electron transport chain take place in mitochondria.
In yeast, pyruvate is converted to ethanol and carbon dioxide in the cytoplasm. It is a two step reaction catalyzes by pyruvate decarboxilase and alcohol dehydrogenase.
Fermentation in yeast helps in regeneration of NAD⁺ which ensures the continuation of glycolysis.
