The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation discovered untapped sources of crude oil in the Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu in 2014- ONGC and Bharat Petroleum discover gas in Tamil Nadu. This source of crude oil was also thought as a means of one step further in tackling the power situation in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu has at present 28 oil and Gas fields in Cauvery basin producing crude oil and natural gas.
