Sarojini Naidu spent three years at King’s College London and Girton College, Cambridge where, opposed to structured education, she chose not to take a degree.
At King’s College, Naidu was encouraged to develop her talents as a poet and to write about her experiences of growing up in India. When she eventually returned to India in 1898 she became a prominent figure in the Nationalist movement and formed a close friendship with Mahatma Gandhi.
Naidu began her presidency of the Indian National Congress in 1925 and was the first governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh from 1947 until her death in 1949.
