The Chipko protests in Uttar Pradesh achieved a major victory in 1980 with a 15-year ban on green felling in the Himalayan forests of that state by the order of Mrs Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. Since then, the movement has spread to many states in the country.

Chipko literally meaning as “hug the tree”, in 1973 the famous Chipko or hug tree movement done in Uttarakhand. Trees in slope prevent the soil erosion, landslides and so on. Bahuguna create awareness among the village people and gathered the people for movement. Contractors came with axe to cut the tree and village people hug the tree and shows their resistance as Sathyagraha way, this movement spreads across the different parts of the country.
