The most usual habitats of lichens are tree barks, decaying woods, leaves, branches, undisturbed soil rich in humus, stones and rocks.
Lichens which grow on stones are called saxicolous.
Lichens which grow on barks of trees are called corticolous lichens.
Lichens are cosmopolitan.
There are many taxa found only in Australia, New Zealand and, perhaps, some nearby islands as well.
