The narrator asks the old man to go from pontoon bridge to truck which were heading towards Barcelona. Narrator asks old man to do so as the enemy artillery forces were approaching the bridge and the narrator being a responsible war correspondent finds it his duty to help old man in escaping from bridge. The old man is reluctant to go there as he states that he doesn't know anyone in Barcelona. Also he is mentally and physically tired. he has walked 12 kilometers from his hometown. He is very much tensed about the security of his pets
