Nitrogen oxides are present in the composition of exhaust gases in the form of oxide and nitrogen dioxide. They are formed as a result of a reaction between atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen or water vapor at a high pressure (28-35 atm) and a temperature of 540-650°C during each compression in the cylinders.
