The three types of gland are all located beneath the gastric pits within thegastric mucosa–the mucous membrane of the stomach. The gastricmucosa is pitted with innumerablegastric pits which house the gastric glands. The fundic glands (or oxynticglands), are found in the fundus and body of the stomach.

Gastric glands are present in stomach lining which has cells producing different type of secretions. The chief or Peptic cells produce Protein digesting enzyme called as Pepsinogen.Another type of cells called as oxyntic or parietal cellsproduce HCl and Castle Intrinsic factor. HCl is needed for activating Pepsinogen into pepsin (the active form). Castle intrinsic factor is important for absorbing Vitamin B12from the food.Mucous cells produce mucous which prevents the stomach lining from getting damaged by HCl.
