- In the story "The Last Lesson" written by Alphonse Daudet, a crowd had gathered in front of the bulletin board which was located at the town hall for reading the news that was put up on the board and the crowd gathered as there was new information put on it and each one of the town wanted to know that new information.
- News had come from Berlin that German would be taught rather than French in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. For the preceding two years, terrible news had been arriving their path through that bulletin board which included the lost battles, the plan and the rules of the commanding officers.
