The answer is India. Buddhism in India was not without a challenge. Within 50 years of Ashoka's death, Magadha general Pushyamitra Sunga brought the Vedic religion back to power. Thus, even though there were many Buddhist kings in the period between 200 BC and 1000 AD, Hinduism was never really out of power for too long. After the Sunga dynasty, Gupta emperors were building Hindu temples and so did the Pallavas of the south. It is just that Buddhists were better at documenting history and thus we get to know more of Indian history from a Buddhist perspective.
