Coir , or coconut fibre, is a naturaw fibre extracted from de outer husk of coconut[1] and used in products such as fwoor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Coir is de fibrous materiaw found between de hard, internaw sheww and de outer coat of a coconut. Oder uses of brown coir (made from ripe coconut) are in uphowstery padding, sacking and horticuwture. White coir, harvested from unripe coconuts, is used for making finer brushes, string, rope and fishing nets.[2] It has de advantage of not sinking, so can be used in wong wengds on deep water widout de added weight dragging down boats and buoys.

The name coir comes from kayar, de Tamiw and Mawayawam word for cord or rope (traditionawwy a kind of rope is made from de coconut fibre.[3][4] Ropes and cordage have been made from coconut fibre since ancient times. Indian navigators who saiwed de seas to Mawaya, Java, China, and de Persian Guwf centuries ago used coir for deir ship ropes. Arab writers of de 11f century AD referred to de extensive use of coir for ship ropes and rigging.[5

A coir industry in de UK was recorded before de second hawf of de 19f century. During 1840, Captain Widewy, in co-operation wif Captain Logan and Mr. Thomas Trewoar,[6] founded de known carpet firms of Trewoar and Sons in Ludgate Hiww, Engwand, for de manufacture of coir into various fabrics suitabwe for fwoor coverings.
