the fist sized human heart is located in the middle of the chest cavity, between lungs, slightly on the left side, behind sternum. it is surrounded by a double walled sac called pericardium. the location of heart is apt because the lungs and pericardium envelope the heart and protect it. this positioning is nearly center of the body, thus helping heart to pump blood throughout the body through a vast network of veins and arteries. also, being behind the rib cage, gives it protection.
