Lactic acid is produced in the in the body during cellular metabolism.

Explanation:

  • During anaerobic respiration, our body produce lactic acid as a by-product. Our bodies’ energy requirement is filled by breaking down sugar in the presence of oxygen.
  • This process is called glycolysis and the end product is pyruvate.  Throughout the day our body burns energy in the presence of oxygen i.e. aerobically.
  • However, when our muscles starts to work overtime, usually during exercise, our body burns sugar in the absence of oxygen and produce lactic acid as a by-product.
